Ocean Explorers Summer Camps:

Youngsters will interact with the ocean to learn about ocean conservation, marine animals, ocean safety, water quality, marine debris, sustainable farming, marine ecology and most importantly... having FUN! Daily activities include a variation of kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, boogie-boarding, surfing, body-surfing, beach play, beach cleanups and ocean education. This is a two hour after school program that is outfitted by Channel Islands Outfitters and taught by Save the Mermaids educators. While the program will be based out of the Santa Barbara Harbor, we will venture to neighboring beaches such as Leadbetter and West Beach to better learn about the environment. This afterschool program will be both geared towards learning fun and exciting new ocean sports, while complementing each day with ocean education.

Our goal is to inspire and create confidence and love for our ocean. Lessons will include:

  • Stand-up paddle boarding to kelp beds and discussing marine wildlife and migration topics specific to the Santa Barbara Channel.
  • Kayak tours of the harbor and half-mile buoy just outside, to visit the sea lions and learn about different evolutionary differences between our local pinnipeds.
  • Play around our harbor and learn about the different types of sustainable fisheries that work locally.
  • Surf and body surf off Sandspit and Leadbetter beach to remind the explorers to keep gain and maintain respect for the ocean. Build team awareness and become stronger through challenging sport activities.

Explorers will meet at the Paddle Sports Center location, 117 B Harbor Way, and get geared up for an afternoon of fun ocean activities. They will have access to wetsuits, paddle gear, and lockers to place their belongings. Together let's explore and learn new skills that bring our ocean to your flippers!
